Curriculum Night

It was wonderful to see so many families at Curriculum Night. I am sharing below the information about our class.

ASSESSMENTS: Students are being assessed for sight words and reading level. We use Raz-Kids for reading level assessments. Once all assessments are completed, you will receive the results and students will be grouped by level.

PHONICS/SPELLING: We are using a wonderful Orton-Gillingham phonics program. Each week, we learn a phonics rule (letter sounds, word families, patterns) and we practice phonetically spelling all week. The spelling assessments will focus on that rule, not on a memorized list of spelling words. You will receive the rule of the week and examples of words.

READING: Students will read in small groups each week. Struggling readers will receive additional phonics support while advanced readers will have more challenging books. Students will also use the Raz-Kids program to read leveled books I encourage students to read at home and choose books on topics that they enjoy.

HOMEWORK: Homework will begin at the end of the month. English uses the same orange folder as the students homeroom. This will be sent home on Fridays and is due the following Friday. Homework packets will have a reading log, handwriting practice (at the beginning of the year), work with our phonics rule of the week, sight word practice. I will also be sending differentiated homework for advanced readers. All homework and newsletters will also be available on my blog.

WRITING: We begin the year with handwriting instruction and practice as well as copying sentences. We will learn about creating sentences correctly. Students write in their journals every week. We will write about both fiction and non-fiction topics throughout the year. We as a school are focusing on writing this year.

First Week

We have had a great first week in English class! Students are learning routines, practicing phonic sounds, talking about the seasons and different kinds of weather, as well as working in centers.

I am assessing students for sight word recognition and reading level. This takes quite some time as each student has to sit with me individually. Once assessments are completed, I will send results home and create reading groups based on levels. After this time, I will also set up Raz-Kids accounts for each student and send the login information home.

I would like to THANK the families who have sent in some items from our class wish list! It is so appreciated!

I hope to see you at Curriculum Night on Tuesday.
